Saleema Amershi

Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research AI

Saleema is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research AI working at the intersection of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. Specifically, she creates technologies to help people build and use AI-based systems. Examples include general purpose tools to help data scientists build reusable predictive models (e.g., interactive machine learning platforms and visualizations) and application specific techniques to help end-users interact with AI-systems they encounter in their everyday lives (e.g., intelligent assistants and personalization systems). Throughout her work, she distills guiding principles applicable in broader contexts to help establish a foundation for human-AI interaction. Most recently, she lead an effort to develop general Guidelines for Human-AI Interaction, a unified and validated set of guidelines for designing human-centered AI. Saleema currently chairs Microsoft's Aether working group on Human-AI Interaction and Collaboration. Aether is Microsoft’s advisory committee on responsible and ethical AI. Prior to Microsoft, she was at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington completing her PhD on "Designing for Effective End-User Interaction with Machine Learning". Saleema also holds an MSc in Computer Science and a BSc in Computer Science & Mathematics from the University of British Columbia where she worked at The Laboratory for Computational Intelligence on tools for teaching AI algorithms.
