Lylah M. Alphonse is the Managing Editor of Government Rankings/News for U.S. News & World Report, where she oversees the Best Countries, Best States, Healthiest Communities and Cities sections as well as the editorial portions of U.S. News' STEM Solutions Presents Workforce of Tomorrow and Healthcare of Tomorrow franchises. She teaches journalism at Northeastern University, and is a regular guest on WGBH-TV’s "Greater Boston" and "Beat the Press" news shows. Before joining U.S. News, she was a senior editor and writer at, where she launched the Women in Politics section and covered health, parenting trends, White House initiatives and politics. She worked as an editor and writer at The Boston Globe from 1994 to 2010 in the Living/Arts, National News and Sunday Magazine sections, and wrote a parenting column for She is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and was named one of the school's Notable Alumni in 2000.
